Privacy & Removal Requests
What personal information appears on FollowTheMoneyIL.com, where it comes from, and how to ask us to remove a home address.
What This Site Publishes and Where It Comes From
This site republishes public campaign finance and lobbying records from these sources:
- Illinois State Board of Elections (ISBE) bulk campaign-disclosure files
- U.S. Federal Election Commission (FEC)
- Illinois Secretary of State lobbying data
- IRS filings by political organizations (Section 527)
Contributor names, amounts, dates, employers, occupations, and addresses are part of the public disclosure record as it was filed.
Removal Requests We Honor
We remove home addresses when we receive a written request under any of these laws:
- the Illinois Judicial Privacy Act (705 ILCS 90), for judges and their immediate family members;
- the Public Official Safety and Privacy Act (5 ILCS 347), for the public officials it covers;
- the federal Daniel Anderl Judicial Security and Privacy Act, for federal judges.
We act on a written request within 72 hours of receiving it.
What a Request Needs
- The name exactly as it appears on this site.
- The zip code shown with that name.
- Which law the request is made under.
- If a representative sends the request, a copy of the officer's written consent (705 ILCS 90/2-10(c)).
What We Redact and What We Keep
We use the same redaction format as the State Board of Elections:
- The street address is replaced with "Redaction Requested".
- The second address line, city, state, and zip code are removed.
The rest of the contribution record stays: the contributor's name, the amount, the date, the committee that received it, and the contributor's occupation and employer. That information is the disclosure itself.
The Durable Fix: Redaction at the Source
The State Board of Elections accepts redaction requests through its Redaction Request form. Select "Judge" or the position that applies.
Once the State Board redacts a record at the source, this site picks up the change on its next data import, and so does every other site that republishes State Board data.
